Without a doubt Havaianas is the most popular brand of flip-flops in the world today. It’s so versatile and comes in fun designs that you can use it almost anywhere. Now that it’s summer time, I’m sure everyone’s excited to use their pretty Havaianas at the beach. Not many people know its history though. Havaianas was born in 1962 from the breezy culture of Hawaii and the serene design of Japan. The word Havaianas is Portuguese for Hawaiians, whose exuberant colors and culture influence each style.

The concept of making your own Havaianas was introduced in 2006 to the local market. Since Make Your Own Havaianas is so popular here in the country, Havaianas Philippines decided to do it nationwide. Anne Gonzalez, Managing Director of Havaianas Philippines also said that “Havaianas occupies a special place in the hearts and feet of our Filipino customers — hence, we are bringing this special personalization to them.”

More people were able to experience and enjoy this fun event as it was held at the All Flip Flops store at the ground floor of SM City Bacolod (North Wing) last May 07 to 10, 2015. The event was held simultaneously in other cities around the country. Also present was Antoinette Begre-Lacson, the sole distributor of Havaianas in Western Visayas. Some local celebrities likewise took part during the 4-day event.

I was so thrilled to be able to join and experience Make Your Own Havaianas and since it was my first time, I really had no idea what to expect. It was fun making my own flip-flops and the design I chose was just perfect. I got a customized hand stamped pin with my initials “DHA” which I chose a couple of days before the event. It was pre-made and not available on the spot. I’ve also chosen a slim sole in shocking pink color, steel gray straps, 1 rainbow pin, and 2 road trip pins. Although this year they have featured a limited edition tropical-inspired sole (image below), I still chose the pink sole — a proof of my undying love for the color pink. Hihi.

Making your own Havaianas is really simple. First, mix and match soles, straps and pins in their selection wheel. Second, someone from the store will help you choose the design you like. She will fill up a form which she has completed according to your specifications. Third, you’ll go to the assembly area to start making your flip-flops. The assembler will collect the soles, straps, and pins you chose and start assembling it. The pins are placed on the strap and then the strap is placed on the soles. Lastly, when the flip-flop is done, you will pay for your purchase and get your customized flip-flops in a nice net bag.
